Contest: Startup Fever board game

Louis Perrochon is an enthusiastic board game player who was inspired to make his own game. This is a trait he shares with approximately 100% of board gamers. What sets Louis apart is that he’s actually going through with it. And he’s doing it through Kickstarter, making the whole process transparent and exciting to watch.

His game is called Startup Fever, set in the world of Internet startups. The pieces are employees, from engineers to salesmen to executives. Opponents try to steal them with better offers. As head of the company, you can choose to invest your resources in personnel or sales. There’s even an expansion that introduces venture capitalists and lawyers, for extra flavor. The goal, as in real-world product development, is to get the most users.

The game is actively being developed, and you can follow along via updates on the Kickstarter page and through these videos on StartupFeverGame.com. And because Louis is a nice guy and wants to encourage fan participation in the game’s development, he’s offering up a free copy of the game to one Puzzler reader. But he needs a little help.

One component of the game is event cards. (This is a standard mechanism of strategy games.) Event cards trigger a sudden shift in status, value, position, etc. Here are some sample event cards Louis has already created:

  • Since you started serving free gourmet food, your nerds are very happy.
  • Ann’s overhaul of the User  Experience is paying off.
  • A Hawaiian “conference” really gets your sales team excited.
  • Charlie, your CEO, went to a conference with an assistant. It looks like they might have shared a room.
  • Your tax haven in Ireland is disputed.
  • Tweeting is successful.

And so on. But he’s looking for more. What events would you like to see? Post your best ideas in the comments. Don’t worry about what exactly the event means within the context of the game — Louis will take care of that part. The best single event will be added to the game, and the contributor will win a copy of the finished product.

You’ve got a week. The ballot box will close at 11:59 PM on Sunday the 22nd. Louis and I will pick the winning contribution and I’ll announce it here on Monday or Tuesday.
